Año 1667, CON PRIVILEGIO, en Madrid, Por Joseph Fernandez de Buendia.1667, Madrid, second edition, small folio, pp [xvi], 204 ff, [viii], engraved portrait frontispiece and ten engraved plates, mostly folding complete as called for, bound in an early twentieth century half blue buckram, marbled boards. Splendid engravings by Pedro de Villafranca, the folding ones particularly charming, the work consists of two parts; the first part is a resumé of the description of Sigüenza in his history of the Escorial; the second a more original detailed description of the construction of the Pantheon and its ornament. First published in 1657, four editions were printed, culminating with that of 1698. An English translation by "a servant of Lord Sandwich" appeared in 1671, and another by George Thompson in 1760. De los Santos (Francisco de la Plaza Cuéllar, 1617 - 1699) was a teacher at El Escorial, chaplain to King Philip IV (whose splendid good looks adorn the frontispiece), writer, historian, musician and painter. Several manuscripts of his musical compositions are preserved in the Biblioteca Nacional de España, and two of his paintings, copies of works by Raphael, are in El Escorial. See Palau, Volume 6, page 462.
Faint water stain affecting the frontispiece, some pages a little browned, generally a very good copy. £950.00
In July we see the Hot Pennies Ceremony, celebrated for over 800 years - come along and watch the local children get their fingers burned - oh how we laugh! This painting by Andrew Stacey and David Johnson, 1981, used to hang above the bar in the White Lion pub opposite the shop, but was rescued from a skip when the pub was being renovated in the 1980s.
...but clearly Lottie, the shop dog, disapproves!
